Early life and education
Bipin Rawat was born on 16 March 1958 in Pauri district of Uttarakhand, a small hill state in northern India. His family has had a connection with the Indian Army since time immemorial. His father’s name was Laxman Singh Rawat and he was a lieutenant general in the Indian Army. His mother was the daughter of Uttarkashi MLA Kishan Singh Parmar. In this way, he got a family of prosperous and good environment. He first got admission in Cambridge High School, Dehradun and after that he also took admission in St. Edward’s School, Shimla. Bipin was performing very well in studies from the beginning, due to which he got success in the army entrance examination.

After completing his schooling, he was successful in getting admission in the National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, the country’s famous army training center. In this way his military life had started. After performing well in all sections in the Defense Institute, he got admission in the country’s highest military institute IMA, Dehradun (Indian Military Academy). In the year 2011, Chaudhary Charan Singh University also awarded Bipin an honorary PhD degree for his research work under Military Media Studies.
Military career of Bipin Rawat
Bipin Rawat got the opportunity to serve in the Army on 16 December 1978 when he was appointed to the 5th Battalion of Gorkha Rifles – 11. With this rifle, his father had also served in anti-terrorist missions for 10 years. In this way his military service started and during his work in the army he got an opportunity to know various important rules and working style. He also got to know the working of the military team with mutual cooperation and the command. After being appointed as Major in the Army, Bipin got the responsibility of leading the company in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir.
After doing this, he was given the task of leading the 5th Battalion Gorkha Rifles in the eastern sector of the LAC (Line of Actual Control) at Kibithu as a Colonel. A good performance earned him a promotion to the rank of Brigadier and he commanded the Rashtriya Rifles, Sector Five, at Sopar. Meanwhile, he got an opportunity to serve in foreign countries and was given the leadership of a multi-national brigade in Chapter 7 of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For his work here, ‘Force Commander’s Commendation’ was honored twice.
On his return to service in India, Bipin was given the charge of the Chief Officer in the rank of Major General for the 19th Infantry Division, Uri. He also led the Headquarters Corps at Dimapur before taking over the command of the South Army at Pune in the same post. On January 1, 2016, after getting the post of Army Commander grade of the Indian Army, he also took charge of the General Officer Command-in-Chief in the Southern Command. After this, seeing his contribution, the post of Deputy Chief was also given in the Indian Army. On 17 December 2016, the Government of India appointed Bipin Rawat as the 27th Chief of the Army Staff. After assuming this position, Bipin Rawat took responsibility for the airstrike on the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training center located in Balakot, neighboring country of Pakistan in the year 2019 after more than 40 Indian soldiers were martyred in the Pulwama terrorist attack in J&K. He went on a tour of the United States of America in the year 2019, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the United States Army Commander and General Staff College International. Major Janarpin Rawat provided military services to the country as well as to the foreign public, he went to Congo for a mission of the United National where he saved the lives of about 7 thousand civilians. Bipin has also received the honor of Honorary General from the Nepali Army, as he has worked to bring mutual coordination between the armies of the two countries and to show the special military relationship. Along with bravery in the army, taking decisions at the right time also becomes very important. Leading his team efficiently and taking the right decisions was his specialty. It is a lesser known fact that it was Bipin who first mooted the idea of a para commando undercover surgical strike after Indian soldiers were martyred in the Uri terror attack. Soon after this, the Indian Army had given a good attack on terror by doing this type of mission. Earlier in the year 2015, 18 soldiers of the country were martyred in a terrorist attack in the state of Manipur. After this incident, the leadership of the army was also handed over to Bipin and in his own way he got the NSCN-K terrorists eliminated by sending a team of para soldiers to Myanmar across the border.

Bipin Rawat helicopter crash and death
On 8 December 2021, CDS Bipin Rawat took off from Suluru Air Force airport in an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter carrying his 9 passenger crew along with a four member crew. But his ship met with an accident at 12:10 in the afternoon near Coonoor in the state of Tamil Nadu. This accident was so tremendous that the helicopter was completely burnt to ashes. His wife and 11 other people were also killed in this accident. According to the Indian Air Force, Bipin was on his way to the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills) to address the faculty and student officers of the Staff Course.
His ship crashed just 10 km from its destination. On the day of the accident, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also confirmed the death of 13 people in this accident through its Twitter account. Out of these only one person Captain Varun Singh could survive but he died during treatment only a week after the accident. On December 10, Bipin Rawat and his wife were cremated according to Hindu funeral rituals in the presence of their two daughters at Brar Chowk. Both of them were cremated by keeping them nearby in the same funeral pyre. Along with this, he was also given a 17-gun salute to give military honours.
