Hirankashyap was an asura whose child was named Prahlad. Prahlad was an exclusive devotee of Lord Hari Vishnu. But his father did not like this devotion of his, he orders his son Prahlad to do his devotion. When Prahlad did not do this, father Hiranyakashyap made a policy to kill him.

Prahlad was given many types of punishment by Hiranyakashyap but Prahlad did not give up his devotion. At last Hiranyakashyap took the help of his sister Holika. Holika had the boon of not being consumed by fire. On the orders of Hiranyakashyap, his sister Holika herself sat in the fire with Prahlad on her lap to consume Prahlad. The result was that Holika herself was burnt to ashes but Prahlad was engrossed in the devotion of Lord Hari Vishnu and survived the fire safely.
